Selling products to a customer base that has become accustomed to certain quantities associated with that product can be likened to what the scriptures described as using two different scale weights to sell your product.
It was a custom of many merchants to use one scale for buying a product and another for selling it.
Of course merchants did this for their own advantage.
So what has changed? Really not much.
Even the food we eat, say breakfast for instance. It has been known for many years that the only food value in many processed breakfast products was in the milk added.
So it is like selling a consumer air (really nothing)for a price. No matter how one tries to dress this matter up, it is a classic example of fraud. Marketing specialists know the law and should really fess up and bite the bullet, be honest with their consumers and up the price.
Years ago I could name three American auto manufacturers who quite often did the same thing with the quality of steel they used in the manufacture of the bodies for their products.
The two of those ring leaders of that type of business have almost gone out of business if it where not for the american public bailouts.
